NYB: Equipment Needed to get Started in Pony Club

By: The National Youth Board

When joining Pony Club, it can be easy to get overwhelmed with required equipment checklists,
apparel choices, and other useful materials. Luckily, the National Youth Board has created a
checklist for basic items that new members will need to succeed in Pony Club!

  1. Helmet: All members must wear a helmet when riding or working around a horse or pony.
The helmet must be ASTM/SEI approved, and fit properly.
  2. Appropriate footwear: Must be worn at all times when riding or working around horses, as
well as in barn areas. Appropriate footwear must cover the ankle, be entirely closed, securely
fastened, and well-fitted to the foot.
  3. Medical Armband or Bracelet: During any Pony Club activity, members must wear either a
Medical Armband or Bracelet. The armband should be worn on the upper arm, and the
bracelet should be worn on the wrist.
  4. Pony Club Pin: Members are expected to wear a Pony Club pin at Pony Club activities and
are encourages to show their Pony Club Pride by wearing them at all equestrian events.
  5. USPC Manuals: USPC offers three Manual of Horsemanship editions, D manual, C manual,
and the H-B/H-A manual. These manuals are based on the Standards of Proficiency that Pony
Club members will be moving through. The manuals are a major resource for members as
their riding and horse management skills grow.
While everyone has their preferences regarding what equipment they use throughout their time in
Pony Club, these items are sure to be useful from your first rally to your A certification!

The National Youth Board (NYB) serves as a liaison between Pony Club’s youth members and the Board of Governors by communicating the needs, ideas, and concerns of USPC youth. NYB members also work with the national office on projects related to marketing, leadership development, and service for the benefit of the organization and all Pony Club members. Delegates of the NYB are between 18 – 23 years of age, highly motivated and dedicated, and have strong leadership and communication skills.
