Merck Animal Health; Do I need to Deworm in the Summer?
It depends. While summer is generally not a peak parasite transmission time in many parts of the country, some horses may require a more aggressive schedule that includes deworming during the summer. The key is to work with your veterinarian to conduct fecal tests to determine your horse’s shedding status (how much and of which parasites he is shedding), then customize the deworming protocol. Low egg shedders typically require only two dewormings a year, whereas high shedders may require up to six treatments. USPC would like to highlight the National Youth Board Members for the current term. Today we meet Area 1 member Jenna Peth. Jenna Peth is a H-B HM, D-3 Traditional, C-2 flat Pony Club member. She attends Western Washington University where she is majoring in Political Science and Global Health. She mostly participated in Dressage while in Pony Club and was a member of Skagit Valley Pony Club in the Northwest Region. USPC would like to highlight the National Youth Board Members for the current term. Today we meet Area 7 member Jessica Pieracci. Jessica Pieracci is a C-3 Traditional member of Golden Hills Pony Club in the Middle California Region. She has been riding her whole life and joined Pony Club when she was 10 years old. She competes in eventing and tetrathlon on her six year old thoroughbred, Apollo’s Harp. Jessica enjoys foxhunting and is an active member of the Los Altos Hounds. Kelly Lynch is an H-B, D-3 Traditional, C-1 Flat member of Centennial Pony Club in the Rocky Mountain Region. Kelly has been a member of Pony Club since 2006. She has been involved regionally at rallies, D camps, and Horse Management and Standards and Certification clinics as well as nationally, competing at Quiz Championships in 2010. She is a C-2/H-B in Amwell Valley Hounds Pony Club of the New Jersey region. In her riding career, she focuses mostly on Eventing and Dressage. We took another opinion poll to get ideas for what horsemen and women, trainers, vets, Pony Club parents and leaders all view as important about their Pre-Purchase exam do’s and don’ts.
