Maddie Kanda is a C-3 Dressage/H-B Pony Club Member from Croixside Pony Club of Minnesota in the Northern Lakes Region. Maddie used her exceptional horse management skills to foster a rescue horse during the summer of 2014. Raayna, whose name means “princess” in Arabic, is an 8yr old Arabian mare who was seized along with her 3yr old son, Johnny. Both horses were part of a neglect case from December 2013 in Crow Wing County. Raayna and Johnny were the only survivors out of a herd of four Arabians. At the time she was seized, Raayna was suffering from pneumonia and had a body condition score of ‘2’ (1 being extremely emaciated and 10 being extremely obese). Raayna was significantly more malnourished than Johnny. The only explanation rescuers could come up with was that she put his life before her own, allowing him to have any food or water they might have received. Raayna and Johnny spent a week at Anoka Equine Veterinary Clinic and then went for rehabilitation at This Old Horse in Hastings before Maddie took over on Raaynas care.
